Pamela Kalafice, KD8MUC, was once again selected to participate in the ARRL Teachers Institute. This session was held in Dayton, Ohio, July 11-14, 2011. The topic for this session was Satellite Communication. Only eight teachers from across the country were selected for this opportunity. The following description is from www.arrl.org:
TI-2 Space is sponsored by the Dayton Amateur Radio Association. The TI-2 Space curriculum focuses on the nuts and bolts of setting up and operating a satellite ground station. This serves as excellent preparation for a scheduled contact with the ISS through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program. But it also provides instruction for continued use of satellites and other man made space assets to explore naturally generated signals, space and a variety of topics.
The course will be 4 days: the first half will be setting up and learning to operate the ground station, the second half will be practice making satellite contacts and instruction in using space borne assets in the classroom. Participants will receive all the equipment necessary to set up a basic satellite ground station. They will participate in an antenna building party (an activity they can duplicate back home with their students).
It was a very exciting week and much was learned. It was great to see friends from the first TI, held in Newington, CT last summer. Matt Severin, N8MS, was a superb instructor and spent many hours with us to ensure our success in setting up and using the new equipment and software. We now have the tools we need to make contacts using various satellites, obtain weather images via satellites, and make contact with the International Space Station. We are really looking forward to unveiling this new technology to our students in September.

On March 17, 2011 we attended Skyware Training. In conjunction with the Cleveland National Weather Service, the Stark County Emergency Management Agency and the Stark County ARES, Severe Weather Awareness Training will once again be held at Stark State College of Technology on Thursday, March 17th beginning at 6:30 PM. Registration will begin at 6:00 PM to issue Skywarn Registration numbers to first time attendees although registration is not necessary to attend the training. The training is being presented as part of Ohio's Severe Weather Awareness Week March 20th to March 27th.
The training is hosted by Tim Warstler, Director of the Stark County EMA and will be taught by Cleveland Weather Coordinating Meteorologist Gary Garnet of the Cleveland National Weather Service (NWS).
The training will consist of an excellent powerpoint presentation covering the science of severe weather, how to recognize weather pattern and cloud formations and how to report your observations to the Cleveland NWS.
The training is free and open to the public. Area public safety officials, school staff, health & safety forces, hospital staff and amateur radio operators are all encouraged to attend this valuable training as we enter the 2011 severe storm season.
M & K Engraving will also be on hand, our exclusive supplier of Skywan ID Badges and additional items.
***PARENTS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND WITH THEIR CHILD****
One of the reasons that amateur radio exists is to provide emergency communications. Severe weather often presents the type of emergency that occurs where hams are called upon to assist. This is important information to know and can help keep people safe.
We look forward to seeing you all there!!!

Here is the release from the ARRL website:
ARRL Executive Committee Approves Grant Funding for Five Schools 01/12/2011 In December 2010, the ARRL Executive Committee reviewed grant applications for the ARRLs Education & Technology Program (ETP), awarding equipment valued at nearly $5000 to five schools. More than 525 schools across the country have received support from the ETP in the form of grants for equipment, curriculum and resources, as well as teacher in-service training through the Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology. Applications for equipment and resource grants are accepted twice each year; application deadlines are May 1 and November 1. Applications for 2011 summer sessions of the Teachers Institute are currently being accepted.
A central goal of the ETP is to develop a foundation of wireless technology literacy among Americas teachers and students. It employs Amateur Radio to explore radio science and electronics and provide hands-on activities that engage students minds and imaginations, opening doorways into math, science and technology curriculum topics, as well as other core curriculum areas such as geography and language arts.
ETP Grants
Grants for school radio stations are awarded to schools that provide a plan to use Amateur Radio as part of an enrichment program and/or as part of in classroom learning. The following schools recently received ETP grants:
Basehor-Linwood High School, Basehor, Kansas: The lead teacher -- a graduate of the ARRL Teachers Institute -- has been developing a program at his school as a result of his experiences with Teachers Institute. This teacher has submitted some very detailed documentation on his program development since attending the Teachers Institute. His program development has progressed to the point where he is now ready to formalize the ham radio component of the program. The school has already started a club and has applied for its station license. The club is well organized and has been meeting since the start of the school year. The activities planned by the teacher reflect real-world applications.
Crenshaw Middle School, Canton, Ohio: The applicant for this grant has been developing a program and already has a club station, AK8CC. Students have become very active with Amateur Radio activities, and the instructor has a clear and concise plan to further grow the program. It is very apparent that the teacher has taken experiences and lessons from the ARRL Teachers Institute and applied it to their school. The program development has progressed to the point where the instructor is ready to formalize the ham radio component of the program; the station has been using borrowed equipment. To date, 10 students have received their Amateur Radio licenses.
Edward Bain School of Language and Art, Kenosha, Wisconsin: The applicant has a strong track record of implementation and impact with resources from ETP grants that he has received at other schools. Once again, he has a well conceived and workable concept to introduce Amateur Radio to his new school, first through a school club and then with school curriculum. Since becoming principal last fall, he has already received donations of equipment and developed a relationship with a local Amateur Radio club. This is important to sustain and develop the integration of Amateur Radio, both in the after school and in the classroom environments. As school principal, the applicant is in an ideal role to assure the programs implementation and integration in this school.
Progress Grants
The purpose of the ETP Progress Grant is to offer modest resource support to those teachers who are currently using Amateur Radio in their classrooms as an instructional tool and who need additional resources for specific purposes. The following schools received Progress Grants:
Old Towne Middle School, Ridgeland, Mississippi: The lead teacher is a graduate of the Teachers Institute and has an active program within the school. He has submitted a very detailed documentation on his program development since attending the Teachers Institute. The grant request includes materials to support the program in his school, which has grown exponentially this past year. This grant will help him grow his program and take it to the next step.
Samsula Academy, New Smyrna Beach, Florida: The lead teacher is a graduate of the Teachers Institute and received a previous Progress Grant to support a very good, hands-on electronics curriculum at the Academy. The teacher has been very diligent in documenting the success of her efforts and providing that feedback to the ARRL and to other schools. This grant request would continue to add to her program and increase her hands-on approach to her program.

The Crenshaw Amateur Radio Club has been participating in the School Round Up Contest this week (Feb. 8-12). After two days of operations, the club has the following stats:
48 Total Contacts 23 States 1 Canadian Province Sweden 7 School Clubs 2880 Points 8.6 hours
Equipment used has been the ICOM 735 (loaned by Dale, NX8J); R8 Antenna (loaned by Bill, N8PW); Kenwood V7A (loaned by John, W0OZZ).
Student participants have included: Cameron, KD8MUA; Mitchell, KD8MTZ; Summer, KD8MUB; Daniel, and Zach. Other students are scheduled to participate the remainder of the week.
Having the school closed Wednesday due to weather conditions is a setback for us, but we plan to work the station from 8-11 am and 3:30-6:00 pm Thursday. Regardless, of how we rank in the competition, the students have grown tremendously through this activity. Their confidence and knowledge in radio communications has come a long way in a short time.
Our other February activities are a field trip to the Mansfield Ham Fest on Feb. 14th and preparing three more students for the Technician Examination on Feb. 27th.
